Toronto police officers cleared in killings

Published: Friday, June 13, 2008Toronto police have been cleared of any wrongdoing in two separate fatal shooting incidents, according to Ontario's Special Investigations Unit. Byron Debassige on Feb. 16 was shot to death by two police officers at Oriole Park in north Toronto. The officers had initially been called to the area to investigate a robbery at a nearby supermarket. The SIU investigation revealed that when the officers began to question the 28-year-old, he pulled a knife out of his pocket and threatened them with it. Also yesterday, the SIU cleared another Toronto police officer in the shooting death of an 18-year-old man in Riverdale Park in downtown Toronto last Halloween. Alwy Al Nadhir was shot by a police officer during a struggle after they saw him and another man committing gunpoint robberies on Oct. 31, 2007.
